Dum aloo (spiced potato curry)

I am hoping to post some recipes that I love while we are all social distancing.
This recipe is actually my aunts and I grew up eating it. I love this because this recipe incorporates some nuts and sesame and that gives it a very unique texture. I have used the same sauce recipe added cauliflower instead of potato and it tasted awesome as well. So feel free to give this sauce your twist and experiment with it!

Ingredients:

  1. 20 Almonds
  2. 12 cashews
  3. 3 dried red chillies
  4. 3 garlic cloves
  5. 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  6. 1/4 cup coconut
  7. 1 tbsp ginger paste
  8. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  9. 3 small tomatoes (pureed)
  10. 12 oz  baby potatoes
  11. 1/4 cup peas
  12. 1/4 tsp turmeric
  13. 1.5 tsp coriander cumin powder
  14. 1.5 tsp  red chilly powder
  15. 1/2 tsp garam masala
  16. oil
  17. salt to taste

Method:
  • Blend ingredients 1-8, with 1.4 cup water, boil the potatoes and peel them
  • saute the blended mix in oil for a few minutes till they turn light brown
  • add turmeric, red chilly powder and cumin-coriander powder and cook for couple minutes
  • add tomato puree, add salt as needed
  • once the gravy thickens, add  the boiled potatoes and peas.
  • add garam masala, simmer for 10-15 minutes, add water if its too dry.
  • enjoy with roti or naan or rice :)
NOTES:
it is roughly 1/4 cup nuts, if you dont have both almonds and cashews, you can use either one as well..usually i eyeball all these ingredients, so you dont need to get to detailed about the measures...
I have measured it to write on my blog but usually its based on basic proportions...

If you are missing 1 or 2 ingredients, go ahead and skip it, it will still turn out great!
this is a really quick dish to make as it does not involve lots of chopping
add more chilly if you like it spicy..
